If it’s green, it’s a vegetable, if it’s a vegetable chances are your kid has already called the family dog over to the kitchen table for back up. Your goal as a parent is to feed your kids the nutrients that they need, but they aren’t making it easy on you. Here are some fun ways that your kid won’t be feeding the dog under the table. http://www.aupair.org/blog/8-ways-to-make-vegetables-fun/

People often ask me why I called my big raised bed garden Vegetalot “Ratatouille”.

So here is the answer- Ratatouille is a traditional French Provençal stewed vegetable dish, originating in Nice. The full name of the dish is ratatouille niçoise. I called the vegetalot planter “Ratatouille” in memory of my grandmother born in Nice who was an outstanding gardener and has given us the taste and the joy of gardening.

My grand mother secret of a good ratatouille is to cook the vegetables separately so each will taste truly of itself.

Ratatouille is usually served as a side dish, but also may be served as a meal on its own (accompanied by pasta, rice or bread). Tomatoes are a key ingredient, with garlic, onions, courgettes (zucchini), aubergine (eggplant), poivron (bell peppers), carrot, marjoram and basil, oregano, rosemary and thyme, like herbes de Provence.

Happy Gardening!

The shady spot is a microclimate that can work to your advantage in the Vegetalot vegetable garden. Whether createad by towering trees or adjacent man-made structures, shade can become your friend, especially in Florida and California where heat from the summer sun is intence. Many of our favorite vegetables succeed because of the sun, but a wide range of interesting and delicious varieties thive in the cooler microclimate within our garden’s shady areas.

In general, leafy vegetables are the most shade-tolerant, while those that fruit from a flower (tomatoes, peppers, squach, eggplants) are the least. In between are the root vegetables requiring a least a half day of full sun: potatoes, beets, carrots, and turnips. Shade tolerant leafy vegetables include lettuce, spinash, swiss chard, arugula, endive and radiccio. Broccoli (and its relatives–Kale, kohirabi, turnips, mustard and cabbage–also grow in partial shade.

Leafy vegetables display another advantage; they can be picked and enjoyed at any stage of maturity, unlike sun-loving vegetables that must ripen. Yet another advantage to these shade-tolerant plants is their conduciveness to successive planting. Planted early in the spring, they are ready to enjoy before the intense heat of mid-summer. Planted in mid-to-late summer, they athrive in the cooler days of early fall. Accordingly, they can be used to fill a gaps where summer-harvested vegetables have been picked, or even planted to take advantage of shade created by adjacent larger plants. One leafy vegetable, spinash, can be planted in mid-september, allowed to overwinter, and harvested earlier in the spring than if it were spring-seeded.

In planning your Vegetalot garden, don’t overlook the shady spots…they can be the source of both your earliest and latest harvest.

Good Gardening

The simple yet effective Vegetalot is a brand new innovation in raised bed growing systems that has taken the market by storm!

It’s clever design means that you can now grow your own healthy and delicious Fruit, Vegetables, Salads & Herbs in the smallest of spaces – on your patio or even your balcony!

The Vegetalot comes in 4feet Long and around 30inch high and 33inch wide making it easy to tend to your crops without bending or stretching.

The great thing about Vegetalot is how accessible it makes your soil and plants. There is no back breaking digging involved and no bending over as all your plants are raised off the ground. It couldn’t be simpler! Whenever you need fresh vegetables or herbs you can walk to your Vegetalot and pick your own home grown goods.

If you’ve always wanted to grow vegetables, herbs and even fruit but haven’t had the space available well now you can. Growing them in a Vegetalot means you don’t need to disturb your garden. If you only have a paved area or balcony then use the Vegetalot and get growing right outside your back door!

Building your Vegetalot couldn’t be easier. all the holes are pre-drilled. Just follow the diagram supplied with every Vegetalot. You will need a Philips screwdriver and an adjustable spanner.

After you have put the Vegetalot together, simply place the pre-formed liner into the Vegetalot so that the top edge overlaps. Fold the liner over the top edge of the Vegetalot and then pull the draw string tight to tighten the liner and hold it in place whilst you fill the Vegetalot with compost/soil.

Fill to within 3 or four inches of the top edge. Once the soil is in place, you can release the draw string and tuck the liner down to be level with the soil. The Vegetalot will take around 5 (42L) bags of compost/soil
